Local Craftsman raises over $1,500 for Ackerman Reunion Scholarship Fund

Marion Smith donates all proceeds to Scholarship Fund in exchange for his home-made wood products

Ackerman resident Marion Smith has long been recognized as a master craftsman. He takes great pride in the many hours he pours into hand-made gun cabinets, china cabinets, chairs, swings, end tables, cedar buckets, clocks, toys, etc. It is widely known that Marion can build anything he can see.

Recently, Marion filled the bed of his old 1923 Model T Truck with hand-made wood products from his shop - Poppas Country - and asked his friends to make a donation to the Ackerman Reunion Scholarship Fund in exchange for the items. Within only a few days his friends had emptied the Model T of his products and the Ackerman School Reunion Fund had gained over $1,500.00.

Marion (AHS Class of 1948) and his wife, Joan (AHS Class of 1947), decided in 1998 that it was time to organize an annual reunion for Ackerman School. Marion said, “We all have many good memories from our days at Ackerman School and thought that an annual reunion could be a time to renew friendships and reflect on those good ole days.” He goes on the say, “Ten years later and we are still meeting on annual basis and now have established an Ackerman Reunion Scholarship Fund to provide an annual scholarship of up to $500 to a graduating senior from AHS planning to further his or her education in an academic or vocational field.”

The Ackerman School Reunion Group will meet this year on Saturday, April 26, in the Ty Cobb Complex on the AHS campus. Registration begins at 12:00 Noon and the program at 2:00 P.M. There is no charge for the event. More information can be found on the website – www.AckermanReunion.com.
